This report presents some of The Geneva Association¿s research over the past few years into insurance insolvency cases from around the world and the most important lessons learned for improving resolution regimes. We begin with an examination of the size of insurance insolvencies globally between the beginning of the fi nancial crisis in 2008 and 2012. Once the magnitude of the insolvencies less than 0.04 per cent of total outstanding liabilities in any one yearis established, we go on to explore cases of insolvencies in the past 23 decades. In this fi rst report, the case studies include three U.S. and eight Japanese life insurance insolvencies. The main objective in examining these cases is to identify the best practices for ensuring smooth, non-disruptive resolutions, with a focus on policyholder protection and the overall stability of fi nancial markets and economies. Further, it is aimed at informing the current resolution debate, thereby contributing to FSB and IAIS efforts to create effective and effi cient insurance resolution systems
