Many wind farms will be built in seismically active areas because that is where many major urban centres are located. Tokyo,Jakarta, Naples, San Francisco, Vancouver, Santiago de Chile, Auckland major economic hubs on every continent are built on shaking round. Building wind energy farms to power these hubs is an attractive option. But some areas with strong winds are also exposed to earthquakes. Neglecting this aspect in the design phase can result bin property losses for the operators and business interruption for the economy at a time when power is urgently needed for reconstruction. As this study shows, the risk will be large. By 2030, China alone will face an expected 200-year loss of USD 1.3 billion, depending on where the earthquake strikes and how strong it is. The insurance industry can insure the risk, but we need to work with the wind energy industry to develop the standards now in order to make our wind power supply resilient. Call us to find out how we can work together.
