Sumario: The Insurance Protection Gap represents the difference between the insurance coverage that is economically necessary and beneficial to society and the amount of coverage which is actually acquired. In this respect, the insurance gap not only provides a way of measuring an insurance market's degree of development, but also acts as an instrument for estimating its potential. In its various reports on the behavior and performance of insurance markets, MAPFRE Economic Research has used this index for this dual purpose.
