Several forces of change are driving legacy insurers to digitally transform. The biggest catalyst for change is competition. Competition between incumbents is becoming fiercer, as a concentration of large premiums in the hands of fewer players has left the rest to fight for scraps and while the pandemic has put a damper on fundin, upstarts are still posing a big threat to industry leaders. To combat these threats in the near term, we expect insurers will focus less on building in-house, and more on buying and partnering.
