<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Both the performance ancl financial position of the US publicly tracled Health insurers improvecl in 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Significant delays and reductions in elective and routine health care, mostly in the first half of the year, combined with the somewhat moderate cost of COVID treatment (given the limited medical treatment available ancl self-isolation), contributed to the in crease in industry earnings. So me inclividuals with severe COVID cases required lengthy hospital stays, with extensive treatment resulting in costly claims, but costs for many hospitalized individuals were manageable as care was not as extensive and hospital stays were generally shorter in duration. </abstract>
