<subfield code="a">It takes only-one-billionth of a second for a single-pulse laser to seriously damage or even blind the human eye. In the case of an employee at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory it took longer, but the damage was no less severe. Though the worker wore protective laser eyewear, he lost partial vision in one eye. Within 15 seconds the intense laser beam melted the plastic glasses and burned his retina. that tragedy pretty much sums up the importance not only of safety glasses, but of how crucial it is to have on the correct type of protective eyewear for the laser in use</subfield>
