<subfield code="a">When evaluating samples of fibres by optical or electron microscopes, rules must be used which determine how fibres not completely contained in a counting area have to be evaluated. Several rules have been in use which overestimate the number of fibres, depending on the length of the fibres relative to the side or diameter of the counting area. A method is suggested which consist in counting all fibres seen on an electron microscope screen when making a traverse, or on micrographs, and weighting the number according to the length dependent bias</subfield>
