A direct transfer technique wich allows samples of airborne dust collected on membrane filters (Millipore MF-series) to be transferred to TEM grids for estimation of asbestos content is described. The technique has been shown by direct observation to give quantitative transfer with no apparent fibre breakage. It has also been demonstrated that the overall procedure for estimation of fibre mass on the filter gives acceptable accuracy for analysis of standard samples. Sample preparation and analysis require approximately 1 man-day per sample with a total processing period of less than 1 week
