<subfield code="a">Farmers' formic acid exposure was studied by field measurements in the silage-making season at 14 Finnish farms. Apart from the direct corrosive action of formic acid liquid, its vapour may have significant toxicological effects. The acid is an inhibitor of the cellular respiration, so that subjects exposed to vapour at or above 30 mg m-3 may experience dyspnoea in addition to mucous membrane irritation. People with cardiovascular disease are probably a special risk group. Respiratory protectors should be worn together with protective goggles in the handling of formic acid in closed silos</subfield>
