<subfield code="a">A comparative study was conducted to asses the potency of three dusts -PVC, alpha-quartz and titanium dioxide- in producing fibrosis at the site of deposition when administered to rats by the intrapleural and intraperitoneal routes. PVC and TiO2 produced little reaction; this consisted mainly of macrophage accumulation with very little fibrosis which reached a peak one week after treatment and showed no evidence of further progress. On the other hand, alpha-quartz produced a severe reaction which consisted principally of fibrous tissue. The reaction was progressive and showed no sign of coming to rest by the end of the study</subfield>
