<subfield code="a">A spectrometric method has been developed for the determination of coal tar pitch volatiles in extracts of particulate matter collected from the atmosphere at coking works. After calibration against extracts of known concentration, it enables determinations to be made with an accuracy comparable to that of the gravimetric method presently in use, namely 2.6 microg. ml-1 extract. The method has the advantage that the result can be obtained in a fraction of the time required by the gravimetric method</subfield>
