<subfield code="a">Routine quality control (QC) schemes are not appropriate or practical for many kinds of analyses in the occupational hygiene laboratory. Even where such schemes are in place, the QC samples often bear so little resemblance to real samples that they are an inadequate index of analytical accuracy. Confidence springs rather from the use of well-tried techniques by experienced people. This necessitates extensive validation work when new or rarely-used methods are required. As quality becomes more important to customers it will be difficult for consultancies to maintain a wide range of analytical services to clients</subfield>
