520  ‎$a‎On-site work in a cotton mill, along with supporting laboratory work, has been carried out to measure the filtration efficiency of vacuum cleaners for the removal of cotton dust and associated residues. Several machines were tested and assessed in terms of the concentration of particulate in the air returned to the atmosphere of the workroom; and, in general, measured dust concentrations were significantly less than 0.5 mg m exp.(-3). The presence of two permanent filters generally gives good performance, and machines so equipped perform well, with or wothout disposable paper bags to collect the dust. The machines must be sufficiently powerful to ensure that no dust is dislodged without being taken into the cleaner, a potential problem associated with the use of long extension tubes; and the means of dust disposal used must not, themselves, generate airborne dust
