YuanSumario: This paper presents the results of a two-dimensional mathematical model for the flow of air past a worker, modelled as an elliptical cylinder, into an open fume cupboard. The Boundary Element Method is used to obtain the fluid velocity away from the surface of the solid boundaries, and evetywhere on the surface of the ellipse the tangential velocity is then obtained using B-splines. Similarity techniques are used to reduce the governing boundary-layer equations to a tractable form, and these are then approximated by using a finite-difference technique; the resulting set of algebraic equations is solved using a step-by-step method. The position of the boundary-layer separation as a function of the distance of the ellipse from the fume cupboard and of the aspect ratio of the ellipse is investigated. The physical significance of these results is discussedEn: The Annals of occupational hygiene. - Oxford [etc.]. - nº 5, October 1992 ; p. 441-4531. Higiene industrial. 2. Contaminantes químicos. 3.
