520  ‎$a‎This study examined the extent to which the potencially toxic lead particulates emitted from motor vehicles are absorbed by competitive cyclists. The pollution of the environment by vehicle-emitted lead has recently raised concern about the consequences for human health and safety. Athletes who train and compete on these roads may be especially susceptible to the inhalation of lead particulates, since marked increases in oral breathing and ventilatory minute volume occur during exercise. After inhalation, lead is absorbed into the blood stream with potential toxic effects on a wide range of body tissues
