<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Tras un accidente ocurrido, en el puerto de Barcelona, al buque "Cala Pevero", que provocó una inundación parcial del mismo, se produjo una situación de fermentación de la carga de arroz y bananas, con posible riesgo para la salud de los trabajadores que tenían que realizar las labores de descarga de dicha mercancía. La labor del Departamento de Prevención de FREMAP consistió en controlar, de forma continuada, la posible presencia de gases tóxicos, nivel de oxígeno y nivel de explosividad de la atmósfera durante las operaciones de desestiba del buque. Este artículo analiza, además de la actuación preventiva realizada, los fundamentos y estrategias de trabajo establecidos, atendiendo a los fenómenos bioquímicos que podrían producirse por el contacto del agua del mar con la carga transportada en las bodegas del buque. Por último se realizan unas consideraciones de orden práctico, que fueron decisivas para el feliz desarrollo del trabajo</abstract>
