<abstract displayLabel="Summary">A large number of National Safety Council members helped develop a proposal for the creation of the Institute for Safety Through Design. Manuele, president of Hazards, Limited, Arlington Heights, Ill., led that initial effort and remains involved in the ongoing development of the institute. The institute's mission is to reduce the risk of injury, illness and environmental damage, the National Safety Council proposes to initiate a comprehensive program that promotes the benefits and defines the methods of including decisions affecting safety, health and the environment in all stages of the design processes</abstract>
