On the one hand they must be sensitive enough to detect a real fire quickly, whilst on the other hand ignoring a wide range of phenomena not associated with a true fire condition. There is often little tolerance between successful detection of an impeding disaster and the time-wasting and often costly mistake of a false or unwanted alarm</abstract>
