Allendale and Factory Mutual Engineering & Research was one bompany that closely investigated losses from Andrew and compared its findings with over 1,000 past storm losses. The Allendale research revealed that the most sever hurricane damage to industrial-level facilities was not structural. Unfortunately, the research found that some builders and roofers didn't follow any quality or design guidelines and skimped on materials, which resulted in an inadequate roofing system. Most importantly, it was determined that the majority of these losses could specifically to withstand hurricane conditions. This realization was the basis for developing guidelines to identify and evaluate roofing deficiencies and create methods for quantifying typical damage scenarios
