Sumario: Recently, dialogue about incentives has entered a new phase. Managers are realizing that incentive programs may, in fact, impair workforce safety performance via numeruous unintended negative consequences. The first part of this article provides some background on the traditional role of incentive programs. Next, it reviews the scientific explanation for their ineffectiveness. Finally, it details a case history from a site moving away from such programs
