This was held in Tampere, Finland, June 29-July 4, 1997. The Congress was hosted by the Nordic Ergonomics Society and the Finnish Ergonomics SocietyThere are continuous changes occurring in small and medium-sized enterprises in relation to the application of new and transferred technologies. These changes have a number of positive and negative aspects that are relevant to ergonomics. On the positive side, introduced technologies often solve production and marketing problems, whilst enhancing productivity and relieving workers of arduous tasks or various hazards. New methods of work organization likewise provide opportunities to improve job content. On the negative side, transferred technologies have given rise to new problems. The technologies cannots always be appropriate to the climatic, anthropometric and organizational conditions of the countries in which they operate. Mention is often made of safety and health risks associated with their use and the lack of organizational measures adjusted to the social and cultural conditions in which transferred technologies are usedEn: Ergonomics. - London [etc.]. - Vol. 40, nº 10, October 1997 ; p. 1118-11291.
