<abstract>El efecto que el envejecimiento de la población puede llegar a tener en el sistema de pensiones se ha convertido en objeto de controversia que enfrenta a detractores y defensores del sistema de reparto. En la primera parte de este trabajo se proporcionan argumentos que justifican la necesidad de separar la elección del sistema de aseguramiento de los potenciales problemas demográficos a los que podamos enfrentarnos en el futuro. En la segunda parte, se presenta una proyección de ingresos y gastos futuros en el sistema español de Seguridad Social que arroja resultados menos pesimistas que los proporcionados por otros trabajos, algunos de los cuales se recogen en este mismo volumen</abstract>
