<abstract>El desarrollo de la banca por Internet en el mundo es heterogéneo, y su expansión generalizada ha distado de las expectativas que se generaron desde principios de la década de 1990. Asimismo, el éxito de las experiencias de banca "on line" ha sido dispar entre las entidades que, de forma independiente o como complemento a sus servicios tradicionales en las oficinas, han emprendido iniciativas de este tipo. En este artículo se ofrece un panorama de la expansión de la banca por Internet en el mundo, de los factores que determinan su éxito y de los principios básicos que distinguen los modelos de banca por Internet del negocio bancario en las oficinas</abstract>
