<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Los desastres de Kocaeli en Turquía y de Quindío en Colombia han dejado varias enseñanzas importantes para la ingeniería sísmica y la prevención de desastres. La necesidad de aplicar correctamente los códigos de construcción sismorresistente, el refuerzo de las edificaciones sísmicamente vulnerables y la aplicación, en general, de medidas de prevención y mitigación del riesgo, ha quedado de nuevo en evidencia como el único y verdadero camino para evitar desastres como los ocurridos en el final del siglo XX</abstract>
