Sumario: In thinking about the role of foreign insurers in domestic insurance markets, it is useful to examine the role of financial intermediaries generally to economic development and to inquire whether foreign insurers could contribute. For if they cannot or will not contribute in some way to economic development, we may legitimately question their relevance for transition economies and developing countries
