<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Non-life reinsurers¿ underwriting results improved in 2013 as catastrophe losses were below average for the year and had less of an impact on company results than in 2012. The group of reinsurers that Fitch tracks generated a calendar-year reinsurance combined ratio of 85.5% in 2013, down from 89.3% for the comparable year earlier.
The group of life insurance operations monitored by Fitch reported a moderate increase in net premiums earned in 2013 compared with a year earlier. In US dollar terms, net premiums earned increased by 5.8% relative to 2012. Each individual company experienced growth in life reinsurance earned premiums in 2013, with the exception of XL Group plc, whose life business is in runoff.</abstract>
