The world is experiencing an unprecedented demographic transformation brought about by declining birth rates and rising life expectancy. Together, these trends are leading to a dramatic increase in the ratio of retirees to workers in many countries and increasingly aged populations even in young nations. By 2030, there will be 18 people aged 65 and over per 100 working-age people and by 2050 the global old-age dependency ratio is projected to rise above 25 retirees per 100 working-age individuals. More retirees to be supported by each person of working age will have profound implications for the sustainability of national statutory pension systems, which are traditionally funded on a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) basis
