In March 2020, state and federal agencies requested the deferral of elective surgeries and routine care to help limit the spread if the virus, relieve pressure on the health care system (hospitals and providers), and preserve personal protective equipment (PPE). This action resulted in a significant decline in claims for routine, elective, and non-urgent visits and procedures since mid-March.
