This first in-depth approach to Hujar's life and work consists of 160 pieces, including previously unexhibited materials: personal papers, contact sheets, and interviews with friends and associates from different periods of his life. Structured in suites -the format preferred by Hujar to present his work- the catalog is configured both as a historical retrospective and as a monographic proposal around Hujar's broad creative arc and his evolution: His beginnings in the 1950s as an assistant in an advertising studio; the formation of his aesthetic through fashion and portrait photography in the late 1960s; his deeply personal chronicle of artists and subcultures in 1970s New York; and the final stretch of the 1980s, as AIDS and creative effervescence transform the East Village (Manhattan)
