<abstract displayLabel="Summary">En un gran paso adelante en el proceso de evolución industrial, numerosas empresas están rehuyendo la integración vertical a cambio de una estructura más ágil centrada en lo que mejor hacen. La idea es potenciar una serie de actividades centrales -diseño y comercialización de ordenadores, fotocopiadoras o automóviles, por ejemplo- y dejar que especialistas externos se encarguen de fabricar las piezas, gestionar las entregas o llevar la contabilidad. Esta nueva clase de empresa evita convertirse en un monolito abrumado por fábricas y burocracia. Tales unidades de fabricación o servicios son modulares: se pueden añadir o retirar con la misma facilidad con que se cambian las piezas en un juego de niños</abstract>
