<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Les antiseptiques sont des substances que détruisent ou inhibent momentanément la croissance des micro-organismes sur les tissus vivants. Ils doivent répondre à des critères d'efficacité sur les germes et à des critères d'innocuité sur la peau. Les critères d'innocuité sont constitués par la tolérance de l'antiseptique en applications locales: tolérance cellulaire, absence de transformation en produits toxiques, absence de persistance anormale après action antimicrobienne, enfin induction, le moins souvent possible, d'une dermite d'irritation, d'une allergie de contact ou d'une photosensibilisation. La sélection des produits, l'éviction des plus irritants ou sensibilisants ou bien un recours moins fréquent à ces substances est parfois possible: utilisation de matériel à usage unique, remplacement des aldéhydes par des produits moins agressifs, tels qu'une association de thymol, butylglycol et hexylène glycol dans la désinfection terminale des blocs opératoires</abstract>
