<subfield code="a">The haemolytic activities of number of fibrous amphiboles, representing the five main types of this class of mineral, were measured. It was shown that there is a positive correlation between haemolytic activity and specific surface area. The mechanism of amphibole haemolisis is discussed and it is suggested that this is due to interaction between the fibre surface and proteins in the erythrocyte membrane. A positive correlation between haemolytic activity and adsorptive capacity for human serum albumin was demonstrated</subfield>
