<abstract displayLabel="Summary">This research unit is conducting as part of a research project being carried out by Ministry of Defence staff to determine if there is any evidence that the health of welders in the Royal Dockyards has been adversely affected by their work. These include a series of morbidity, mortality and clinical studies seeking evidence of chronic respiratory disease. The author chosens to concentrate on one of the morbidity studies, as this serves to illustrate several aspects of this discussion, and to emphasise the methods used and difficulties encountered rather than results</abstract>
