Assessment and control of risks from legionnaires'disease / J.M. Sykes and A.M. Brazier
Sumario: The fact that Legionella is ubiquous in nature poses problems for assessment and control. The relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974, require one to do what is reasonably practicable, a duty which entails a balance between the quantum of risk and the cost of avoiding it. The paper explains the Health and Safety Executive's attitude towards the assessment of potential risk situation, the control of factors which promote multiplication and the design, maintenance and operation of systems which may disseminate respirable aerosols. The joint microbiological and engineering approach, which this attitude entails, is designed to minimize the incidence of a disease which has attracted much public interest
