520  ‎$a‎The detection and monitoring of toxic gases in industrial atmospheres with the aid of direct-reading instruments presents a number of problems, these may include: zero drift; slow response; lack of selectivity; and insensitivity to some gases. These problems can be ameliorated or overcome by sequentially exposing the sensor to a series of samples, some or all of which have been pumped though gas midifier layers to remove or modify relevant constituents of the gas stream. The requirements of such a system and suitable designs of pumps for application to fixed of portable monitors or alarms are discussed
