Sumario: Shortly after the publication of the British standard on fume cupboards in 1990, BS 7258, a Draft for Development, DD 191, was issued. The draft deals with containment testing and, it is hoped, will form the basis of a further part of BS 7258. In part I of this study the features of a containment test (source design, sampling grid spacing, test gas samplers, etc.) are described and compared and certain midifications to the DD 191 procedure are suggested. In part II measurements on an aerodynamic fume cupboard in a test room show the effects of selection of the test variables
