<abstract displayLabel="Summary">El objeto de este trabajo es analizar las razones que motivan las situaciones de insolvencia, provisional o definitiva, de las empresas y, en particular, las causas que fomentan un aumento desproporcionado en las quiebras y suspensiones de pagos, que en los últimos años han alcanzado en España y en otros países industrializados, niveles desconocidos con anterioridad, tanto en número de empresas como en volumen de pasivos declarados. El trabajo se organiza en la forma siguiente: en un primer apartado se estudia la estructura y rentabilidad financiera de la empresa española a través de la evolución temporal e intersectorial de diversos ratios financieros de las empresas públicas y privadas españolas en el período 1982-1992. En un segundo punto se analizan las situaciones de insolvencia, a través de la evolución de las suspensiones de pagos y quiebras en relación con el nivel de endeudamiento, durante ese mismo período. Finalmente, y dentro del apartado de situaciones de insolvencia, se trata en último lugar el riesgo, responsabilidad y seguro en la empresa</abstract>
