Diabetes is a disease in which a person's body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into the energy that your cells need to stay alive. If you don't have insulin, your cells will starve, and nerve damage will result. Doctors can detect diabetes through special blood tests; sugar accumulates in the bloodstream when it is not consumed for energy. There are two major types of diabetes
