<abstract displayLabel="Summary">In the hazardous-waste-treatment industry, the law of supply and demand seems to be working: consolidation and falling prices are the result of the fact that the amount of hazardous waste produced in the United States is going down. Between 1989 and 1991, the most recent year for which the EPA has figures, the amount of hazardous waste fell by some 30 million tons, to about 168 million tons. Handling hazardous waste is very expensive. A lot of companies have gone back to look very hard at ways to reduce the amount of hazardous material they generate, whether it's through processing efficiency, recycling or finding new materials that aren't hazardous in the first place</abstract>
