Auparavant, il aura fallu contourner Lyon, construire la ligne de TGV Rhône-Alpes, 115 kilomètres de ligne à grande vitesse ponctués d'une succession de chantiers exceptionnels. Les travaux commencent fin octobre 1990. L'abattage est réalisé au moyen d'une machine à attaque ponctuelle électrique et le front d'attaque protégé par projection du béton additionné de fibres en polypropylène et dans certains endroits par des tôles de blindage.
