<subfield code="a">The present study clarifies the influence of the normal wear of shoe heels and soles on their frictional properties. All friction measurements were performed with a prototype apparatus developed at the Institute of Occupational Health. The work is a completion of earlier work to examine means of improving the slip resistance of safety footwear. The fundamental mechanisms of friction between shoe soles and contamined floors are also discussed. Some experiments with slabs of sole materials were carried out to assess contact pressure effects from the viewpoint of slipping</subfield>
