<subfield code="a">The Australian Fire Engineering Guidelines, developed by the Fire Code Reform Centre, has provided an agreed rational methodology for understanding fire engineering analysis of buildings. This is an essential step if performance-based regulations are going to deliver improved fire safety consisten with better designed, innovative and cost-effective builings for a competitive society. While the guidelines have drawn on a number of international developments, including the extensive work in the UK, there is still much to be done. A cornerstone of the programme in Australia is the introduction of much wider use of risk assessment techniques into fire safety design of buildings</subfield>
