<abstract>El estado de salud ambiental en América del Sur está obligando a sus líderes, organizaciones y comunidades a cambiar su perspectiva de la salud humana y su relación con el medio ambiente y el desarrollo nacional. Los gobiernos enzarzados en mantener las democracias nuevas e intranquilas han hecho del crecimiento económico una prioridad a costa de sus programas de salud, se ha abstenido de establecer infraestructuras preventivas, como por ejemplo, planes de manejo de agua. El crecimiento urbano trajo problemas. Las emisiones industriales, la incineración de combustibles fósiles y el transporte han ocasionado una grave contaminación del aire</abstract>
