<subfield code="a">The visibility of asbestos fibres in the phase contrast optical microscope has been investigated in an experiment in wich the same fibres were observed in photographs taken using both optical and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that fibre visibility is a function of both fibre diameter and fibre length. All fibres longer than 5 microm and with diameters larger than 0,125 microm were visible on the optical micrographs, although the fairly small number of fibres examined makes this limit tentative</subfield>
