<subfield code="a">In early 2009, Aon Consulting - one of the worlds largest employee benefit firms - conducted a survey of its business leaders across Europe. The objective was to establish a picture of how pension benefits provision was being affected by economic and financial turmoil in each individual country. The interviewees were chief executives and senior consultants at Aon Consulting working in eleven countries with total private pension assets of circa 4 trillion. The ways in which pension benefits are delivered in different European countries are diverse, ranging from the fully-funded defined benefit (DB) models prevalent in Ireland, the Netherlands and the UK to the fully insured and predominantly defined contribution (DC) arrangements of Scandinavian countries. Such differences have a significant impact on the competitiveness of companies working within each country and globally, as well as the benefits accruing to pension scheme members. These have been exacerbated by financial and economic turmoil</subfield>
