Il est également au carrefour des services et, par conséquent, le poste clé du fonctionnement de l'établissement. Sa mission comporte une extrême variété de tâches allant de la réservation à la facturation des séjours des clients. Elle peut aussi, dans certains hôtels, exiger une véritable polyvalence et inclure des tâches complémentaires habituellement confiées à des métiers tels que concierge, voiturier, portier, bagagiste, liftier, chasseur, groom... voire barman au serveur.
