<subfield code="a">The Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC) is to be formally inaugurated in December 2015. There has been some progress towards economic integration and cooperation among the ASEAN member states since the signing of a Preferential Trading Agreement in 1997, including harmonisation of product and safety standards, implementation of investment agreements and pilot projects to facilitate customs transit. The establishment of AEC is another step to closer ties, but progress to deeper integration and associated liberalisation of markets will likely take many years yet. Core aims of the AEC are to facilitate free flow of goods, services, investment and skilled labour among the ASEAN states, and also freer flow of capital. The free flow of services, including that of financial services, could have far-reaching implications
for insurers. The ASEAN insurance sector has expanded significantly in recent years, despite economic headwinds: total insurance premiums are estimated to have risen by an annual average of 11.4% in the last 10 years. However, insurance penetration remains low, especially in the less-developed ASEAN member states</subfield>
