<subfield code="a">A.M. Best's outlook for the China non-life insurance market is negative, although we expect overall market conditions to improve slightly over the near term, particularly when compared to the last couple of years, when the introduction of motor de-tariffication affected the market. However, intense competition, increasing investment risks, and a tightening regulatory environment will continue to create a challenging operating environment for Chinese non-life insurance companies. A.M. Best believes that smaller players in particular will have a tough time remaining competitive.</subfield>
