Mortality in Ireland and Northern Ireland 2000 - 2021 and the joint modelling of irish and northern irish life tables / Linda Daly and Mary Hall
Sumario: This research analyses mortality trends in Ireland and Northern Ireland from 2000 to 2021 and develops a joint modelling approach to produce coherent and smoothed life tables for both regions. Using Generalized Additive Models and the Kannisto model, the study generates region-specific mortality estimates that address inconsistencies in existing national tables. It also evaluates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by calculating excess mortality based on both historical trends and mortality projections. Results show significant shifts in relative mortality between the two regions over time and reveal that Northern Ireland experienced higher excess mortality during the pandemic period
