<abstract>A shake-out is predicted in the European insurance industry over the next five years, a transformation deeper and more rapid than any in living memory. The driving force is deregulation, which is opening up the industry to new entrants, both domestic and foreign. These changes are leading to a contraction in the number of major players in each country as companies react to the pressure on profitability created by increasing competition. These are some of the conclusions of a recent large-scale investigation into de major issues facing executives of insurance companies in Europe over the next five years.The survey was concerned with the primary market for insurance and did not analyse the reinsurance market as such. However the trends set out below will clearly be of interest to the reinsurance market since they have a major impact on that market's buyers</abstract>
